Luc Charles Campbell

On August 13th, we finally made our name announcement. Luc has been one of my favorite names since I was little. One night while my family was out to dinner at Roys in Hawaii we decided to claim future children's names. I got to go first and even though I knew it was a risky move because my sister and I both liked the name Luc, I stuck with my heart and selected my all-time favorite girl name first (I obviously was convinced that my first born would be a girl ;)). Sabrina picked next and selected Luc. I was so bummed, but new it would happen and again wasn't too worried because I think I figured I would have girls first and not have to worry about boy names for a while. In fact, one of the other names I liked was Nic (we were really into different spellings and because of my name starting with a C I especially liked it). Well fast forward all these years and go figure, I met and married a Nic. I remember telling a few people after we got married that Luc Campbell would be the cutest name and they always agreed, but I knew my sister did not feel the same way. I even joked with her that she should let me have the name because Nic and Luc were meant to be! She joked that there were plenty of other names I could take and change the ending to a C. Her suggestion: Dick, but spelled Dic. haha. ;)

Every time someone we knew named their kid Luke or Luc, I always mentioned that that was one of my top name choices (if they spelled it Luke, I didn't mention my spelling). When we found out we were having a boy the first time around we immediately took Luc off the table, even though we both really liked the name. I didn't want to start a fight with my sister and knew she had fairly claimed the name. I mean, I had the first choice after all and didn't pick it so it was rightfully hers. Thankfully it wasn't an issue as Nic came up with Hudson one night in Bendigo when we were talking about using last names as first names.

When we found out I was pregnant with another boy a lot of people just suggested using our other favorite name from the last pregnancy, Aidan. I never understood this before having a kid myself, but I just couldn't use that name. Even though we didn't end up naming Hudson Aidan, I associate that name with him and that pregnancy. I spent a good number of days referring to him as Aidan and just couldn't imagine using it for this baby. So we had a big challenge ahead of us coming up with a name. Pretty early on Sabrina told me, just like she had during my last pregnancy that we could use Luc, but this time I could tell she was more sincere about it and genuinely wouldn't be upset if we actually used it. We tried to come up with other names to avoid using it, Eli, Luca and Nash were a few others that were on the table at one point or another, but we kept coming back to Luc. I have always loved the name and knew it was the best choice so I decided on it pretty early on, but Nic took a lot longer to come around. He kept thinking he would have an aha moment and another name would come to him, but as time passed, he hadn't come up with anything he liked better.

When the Kings started their remarkable journey towards the Stanley Cup, I joked that it was a sign and made a deal with Nic that if they won the whole thing, we had to name our son Luc, after my favorite King's player, Luc Robitaille (the original inspiration for the name when Sabrina and I were kids). He agreed and the night they won the cup, I was ready to make our name announcement, but I could tell Nic still wasn't 100% so we waited. He even painted the name Luc on the nursery wall just like he did with Hudson's nursery, which I also thought was confirmation that he was ready to commit, but again, he wasn't quite 100%. As we got closer and closer to our due date, I think he realized that he wasn't going to come up with a name he liked more than Luc and so the decision was finally made. It's the first name we ever agreed upon even before Hudson and has always been one of our favorites, so I know Nic will be as happy with the name as I am.

As far as his middle name, we went the family route again. We got so lucky with Glenn for Hudson (if you remember from this post, it is my Papa Fred's middle name and Nic's Pa's name~both spelled it the same too!) and we got just as lucky with this middle name. Charles is my dad's name and Nic's Pop's middle name so we again are honoring both sides of our family. :)

I must admit that to us boy names are much harder than girl names (maybe because I've had my girl name picked out forever and Nic loves it too~hopefully we get to use it someday), especially the second time around, but we love our 2nd son's name and hope that he loves it too!
