Atherton Tablelands

On Tuesday, August 2nd, we went on Captain Matty’s Barefoot Tour. Captain Matty arrived barefoot, shocking right?, around 6:30am (relaxing vacay, huh?) in his hippie-van filled with flowers and dream catchers. We then went to hostile after hostile picking up young backpackers from Germany, England, Isreal, and Australia. Nic’s parents were starting to look a bit out of place and even joked with Captain Matty about getting a “senior discount.” Luckily, another “mature” couple from South Africa joined the tour. Whew!
Just to give you an idea of what Captain Matty is like, we listened to Sublime, Bob Marley, and other similar artists all day, Captain Matty spent a good portion of the tour trying to make love connections between the different backpackers, trying to get girls to flash construction workers, and asked each of us to share with the bus if we fold or scrunch our toilet paper. Needless to say, we spent a good portion of the day laughing! But, more important than the pure entertainment provided by our tour guide himself, the actual sites we saw were amazing. We spent the day exploring the Atherton Tablelands, which often get over-looked, which is to be expected since it has to compete with the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, but I honestly think it was my favorite day! We saw so many gorgeous waterfalls and did things I have always wanted to do like swim in a waterfall and go down a waterfall slide (the second wasn’t something I had thought about before, but I’m sure glad I got to do it!).
