On November 2nd, we went to Bill Sharman's funeral. Bill Sharman's daughter, Nancy, is the owner of the dance studio I grew up at. Nancy and her daughters have always felt like extended family (Theresa and Cindy babysat my sister and I for entire summers and even went on family vacays with us). Since our family has always been such huge Laker fans and always went to games, we also became very close to Bill.
It was a sad day of course, but because Bill had lived such a long, wonderful life, it made it easier to celebrate his life instead of mourning his death. Joyce did a wonderful job planning the funeral. In fact, it was one of the most impressive funerals I have ever been too. I guess that is to be expected though when you are honoring someone as talented and successful as Bill.
Jerry West, Jeannie Buss, Pat Riley, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant were just a few of the incredible speakers at the funeral. So many basketball greats and celebrities filled the ballroom to remember Bill. I know Nic, as a life long basketball fan, was amazed to see so many of his idols in one room. It was so fascinating to hear stories about Bill from all of these superstars.
Not only was Bill one of the few people to be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame as a player and a coach, but he was one of the kindest, most lovable men off the court. I always enjoyed visiting him at games as a child, but my fondest memories of from the year I was a Laker Girl. I would always try to run out and dance in front of Bill and Joyce. They would smile and wave and cheer me on. I also loved chatting with them in the tunnels under Staples. The last time I saw Bill was at Dancin' in Acton's recital. As I danced up the aisle for the opening number, I spotted Bill and Joyce on the aisle. I smiled and waved and it felt just like old times at Staples Center. I got to chat with them after the show and even showed them a video of Hudson making baskets. I'm so thankful to have known such a wonderful man.
After the funeral, a beautiful reception took place outside. They had amazing food, gorgeous ocean views, and Cindy and Theresa choreographed a number for their kids to perform to I Love LA. It was really cute and Bill would have loved it.
Here is a wonderful tribute to Bill Sharman if you would like to read more.
